2025 — The Portal, Iona Stichting, Amsterdam Art Week, NL (Solo)
Press release
In this year’s edition of Amsterdam Art Week (May 20–25, 2025), Iona Stichting unveiled a new site-specific brass performative sculpture by Germaine Kruip, titled "The Portal".

Polished brass portal and beater

Unique
Since 2017, Kruip has been creating what she calls 'sonic sculptures' in collaboration with the renowned German instrument makers Thein Brass. Made from a special metal alloy, these works are sculptures in their own right, but can also be played as musical instruments.
"The Portal", a 2.5 cm-thick polished brass frame, functions both as an instrument and an architectural passageway—a gateway to an expanded field of perception.
As a visitor, you can enter this transitional space and ‘play’ the work using a percussion mallet, creating an almost tangible auditory environment. The spatial sound resonates through the bodies and minds of those who pass through, gently awakening a broader sensory awareness.
As in Kruip’s broader oeuvre, "The Portal" empowers the viewer—not only in interpretation but also in creation. It reminds us that art can be more than something to observe; it can be something to live with, engage with, and even grow through.
